About
As a performer and researcher of Renaissance and Baroque vocal music, American soprano Julie Knott is committed to the music from centuries past, presented through a modern and socially relevant lens. Based in Baltimore, Maryland, she is an avid performer of opera, oratorio, and art songs with a specialization in Early Music and Plainchant. Her passion for early music was sparked during her time as the soprano in residence at St. Lawrence Latin Mass Parish in Harrisburg, PA. There, she had the exciting opportunity to train in Solemne Style plainchant, as well as sing motets and polyphonic mass settings on a weekly basis.
Julie recently performed as the soprano soloist in Orff's Carmina Burana with the West Shore Symphony Orchestra, and made her debut with the Hershey Symphony Orchestra as the soprano soloist in Poulenc's Gloria. Previously, she performed on Messiah University's "High Center Concert Series" with the Messiah University Wind Ensemble as the soprano soloist for Three American Hymns by Luigi Zaninelli.
In 2023, Julie presented her undergraduate research project, “Performance and Pedagogy: The Music of Barbara Strozzi and Baroque Vocal Chamber Works,” where she studied excerpts from Strozzi’s Op. 7 Cantata, Diporti di Euterpe, and conducted research on the pedagogical benefits of Baroque performance style, placing emphasis on the usage of vibrato and ornamentation.
Alongside her performance and research endeavors, Julie is a versatile voice teacher. In her studio, students train in a variety of styles, build healthy technical practices, and are guided in their preparation for auditions and school/community performances. She is committed to the continuation of historical performance practice in a way that is exciting and approachable for young singers. Julie recently completed an undergraduate degree in Vocal Performance at Messiah University and is currently pursuing her Masters in Voice and Historical Performance at The Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.
